When you open Eboocz for the first time you need to decide where you want to store your ebooks? On iCloud or local? You can always change your preference in the Preferences screen, but it is an important decision that you should consider for a minute.
iCloud has a couple of benefits. You can work on your documents on different macs for instance and of course you don’t have to think of backing up your documents.
On the other hand, not everybody wants their manuscript to be stored in the cloud. This is almost a philosophical question, or a question of trust. Do you want your novel, the document you’ve been working on for years, to be stored in the cloud? Some people will answer this with a yes without giving it a second thought, but I know writers that are more conservative and that guard their document as their greatest treasure. The idea of their novel sitting on some anonymous server scares them.
For those people I added the feature to store your documents locally. If you choose local storage, your books are stored on your local machine. But perhaps not in the way you’re used to. Eboocz stores your books automatically. There is no Save button because when everything is saved automatically, why would you want a Save button? You also don’t have to think of where your files are stored. They’re simply stored within Eboocz. No need to worry about where they are. You can of course make backups with Time Machine and you can also make backups of your individual books. I call them Archives and we’ll cover how to make them another time.
One warning about iCloud. If you intend to work on a book on different macs, you should also be aware of the limitations of iCloud. Synchronisation is not always immediate. It may take several minutes before changes on one system show up on the other. This is not a limitation of Eboocz, but a limitation of iCloud. If you’ve worked offline, it’s best to first let that version sync with iCloud, before you start working on the same document on another system.
Also, working on two systems at the same time is not advised, since it creates conflicts. Eboocz warns you about those conflicts and lets you choose. In case you’re in doubt which version to choose, we advise you to restore both versions so you can compare them.
